  • In practical classes, the student has prior access to the experimental protocols to be carried out in each class session, which allows for prior reading and preparation. These protocols are accompanied by a set of questions, to ensure individual preparation and, subsequently, the discussion of procedures and results.

  • Publicizing the main techniques of staining of cells and tissues and their applications in clinical pathology diagnosis and research. Identify the biochemical characteristics of a given cell or tissue component that allow the coloring / impregnation; Identify and describe the principles of coloring / impregnation of cell components and underlying tissues to a given histochemical method; Explain the principles of histochemical methods which reflect the different components and tissue molecules and cite the applications thereof in diagnostic Pathology; Identify the factors that influence the quality of different histochemical methods; Identify and describe the main methods for the evaluation of enzyme activity in a tissue; Identify and implement different types of controls used in histochemical and histoenzymatic methods; Observe and interpret the microscopic histochemical and histoenzymatic methods performed in practical classes and assess their quality.

    A classificação final (CF) da unidade curricular por avaliação contínua é obtida a partir das classificações obtidas na componente escrita (T) e na componente prática (PL). A componente escrita consta de duas frequências escritas e é relativa aos conteúdos teóricos. A classificação mínima é de 9,5 valores. A componente prática consta de 2 momentos de avaliação práticos realizados durante as aulas. A classificação mínima em cada frequência prática é de 9,5 valores. A classificação final é calculada a partir da seguinte fórmula: CF = 0,50 T + 0,50 PL. A classificação de todos os instrumentos de avaliação é expressa numa escala de 0 a 20 valores, sendo que o valor ponderado das classificações obtidas em cada componente, tem de ser igual ou superior a 9,5 valores.

  • The physicochemical mechanisms of most histological stains are currently clarified. Histological staining methods, from acid dyes to metal impregnation, involve broadly similar physicochemical principles. The main theories on common staining procedures will be described and discussed, for the correct preparation and analysis of tissues in order to diagnose pathologies and cooperate in research activities, within the required quality parameters, as well as to facilitate the rational trouble-shooting, if problems are encountered.
