  • By the end of the semester, students should have achieved the following learning objectives: O1: Understand Geographic Information Systems as geographic modelling systems and territorial data infrastructure. O2: Distinguish conceptually and operationally between GIS, CAD and BIM, understanding the possibilities and limitations of their integration. O3: Critically interpret territorial policy instruments in light of the digital infrastructure necessary for their operationalisation and monitoring. O4: Formulate a conceptual proposal for a territorial Digital Twin consistent with national or regional strategic instruments. O5: Develop critical, argumentative and strategic skills in the articulation between territory, spatial data and sustainability.

CP4 - Territorial Digital Twins: concept and evolution; GIS as the basis for Digital Twins; integration of spatial data, indicators and monitoring; building-territory relationship. CP5 - GIS and territorial policy in Portugal: SDGs, Circular Cities, PROT Algarve, PNPOT and REOT 2024. CP6 - Conceptual proposal: data structure, essential GIS layers, indicators and model applied to strategic instruments.

  • The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) course introduces students to understanding territory as structured digital infrastructure. GIS is approached not only as a cartographic tool, but as a spatial modelling system and structure for territorial data relations, providing a conceptual basis for the development of territorial Digital Twins. In a context of increasing digitisation of territorial planning and governance, the course covers the fundamentals of GIS, BIM-GIS integration, Spatial Data Infrastructures and national and regional public policy instruments. The aim is for students to understand the territory as a digital data system and recognise the strategic role of spatial data in monitoring and evaluating sustainability and spatial planning policies, promoting a critical and contemporary view of architectural practice in integrated digital territorial environments.
