- The methodology combines theoretical lectures, image analysis and guided discussion, articulating multiple approaches to artistic practice and its historical, political and social contexts. An anachronic perspective is adopted, bringing together examples from different periods to encourage comparative readings and critical interpretation. Classes include debates, observation exercises and small research tasks that prompt students to connect theory and practice. Tutorial guidance supports individual development through structured study, writing and argumentation. Whenever possible, visits, meetings with professionals or digital resources complement the work developed in class. The methodology prioritises autonomous critical thinking, analytical rigour and the ability to contextualise artistic production across different times and contexts.

- Develop a critical understanding of artistic practice in dialogue with different moments of history, adopting an anachronic approach that connects past and present. Identify continuities, shifts and tensions that shape artistic production, strengthening analytical, interpretative and contextual skills. Foster methodological autonomy through research practices that integrate theoretical references, observation, reflection and experimentation. Cultivate awareness of contemporary technological, social, political and cultural issues, understanding their impact on artistic creation and reception. Reinforce communication, argumentation and presentation skills, supporting the development of an independent critical voice.
- The programme develops an anachronic path through History, connecting key moments to understand how technologies, media and concepts have reshaped artistic production. Through central case studies - from Baroque painting to contemporary practices - it examines themes such as image construction, perception, the relation between technique and meaning, and the shifting role of the viewer. It analyses continuities between traditional media and mechanical or digital devices, highlighting how photography, cinema and hybrid media have redefined ways of representing reality. Movements that transform notions of space, time and materiality, such as Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism and Abstraction, are addressed in dialogue with current debates on the body, politics, technology and image circulation. The aim is to provide a critical framework that situates contemporary artistic practice within its genealogies.

Exposição de um tema ou problema derivado do programa, complementada por investigação autónoma (desenvolvimentos teóricos, casos de estudo, reflexão crítica). Avalia¿se a capacidade de contextualização, síntese e formulação de questões pertinentes. -
50% - Trabalho final prático
Desenvolvimento de um projeto artístico que integre pesquisa própria, acompanhado de dossier de projeto e relatório explicativo. Avalia¿se a coerência conceptual, o rigor metodológico, a experimentação e a clareza na apresentação. -
10% - Avaliação contínua
Avaliação intercalar e final considerando assiduidade mínima (75% de presenças), participação, pontualidade e envolvimento ao longo do semestre.

Assessment is composed of three elements that combine research, artistic practice and continuous monitoring:

40% - Thematic presentation
Oral presentation of a theme or problem derived from the syllabus, supported by autonomous research (theoretical developments, case studies, critical reflection). Evaluation focuses on contextualisation, clarity of argument, synthesis and the ability to formulate relevant questions. -
50% - Final practical project
Development of an artistic project integrating independent research, accompanied by a project dossier and a written report explaining concepts, methods and formal choices. Assessment considers conceptual coherence, methodological rigour, experimentation and quality of presentation. -
10% - Continuous assessment
Ongoing and final evaluation based on attendance (minimum 75%), participation, punctuality and overall engagement throughout the semester.

A classificação final (CF) da unidade curricular por avaliação contínua é obtida a partir das classificações obtidas na componente escrita (T) e na componente prática (PL). A componente Teórica consta de duas frequências escritas e é relativa aos conteúdos teóricos. A classificação mínima em cada frequência é de 8 valores. A componente prática consta de 2 momentos de avaliação práticos realizados durante as aulas laboratoriais . A classificação mínima de cada momento é de 8 valores. A avaliação contínua do desempenho do aluno nas aulas laboratoriais (10%) A classificação final é calculada a partir da seguinte fórmula: CF = 0,60 T + 0,40 PL. - The teaching and learning methodologies for this course unit are predominantly centered on tutorial guidance and feedback received in the sessions of the 'Dissertation/Final Project Work Support Seminar'.Under the supervision of one or two expert advisors in the field, the master's student must develop an independent research project on a topic within their area of specialization.This model involves periodic sessions between the advisor and the student.In these sessions, the parameters of the research are outlined, and a work plan tailored to the nature of each project is established.This plan may encompass various aspects, defined by the advisor based on the specificity of each project.The tutorial follow-up work provides support for the phased completion of the final stages of the project or dissertation, and the preparation of the final document.The assessment focuses on the final object of the dissertation or project, and its discussion is conducted in a public act before a jury

- Development of research or a project in the student's area of specialization, leading to the preparation of a Dissertation or Project, with initial continuous support obtained through the 'Dissertation/Final Project Work Support Seminar'. The model is chosen by the student and can be theoretical or theoretical-practical. The work developed in the CU is based on regular dialogue with the supervisor(s), who guide the students through the research and/or artistic creation process. The competencies to be developed are according to the chosen approach: . For the theoretical track: the capacity to conduct autonomous research, apply methodologies specific to art, and communicate the findings in a clear and effective manner. . For the theory-practice track: the aptitude for creating an artistic project that reflects a strong dimension of authorship, in addition to the capacity to conduct research and communicate both the process and the outcomes in a clear and effective manner.
- The syllabus content is adaptable, aiming to provide the necessary support for the research to be conducted by the student. The general framework includes: . Definition of the theme, objectives, and methodology, subject to approval by the master's scientific committee; . Establishment of a timeline and working methodology; . Literature review, laboratory or field work, as applicable; . Initial implementation of the plan, including data collection and/or artistic creation, as applicable; . Review of progress with the advisor and adjustments to the plan as necessary; . Continuation of the research work or artistic project, with a focus on the development of the written component; . Presentation of the work in its concluding phase for feedback from external or internal reviewers; . Completion of the thesis or project, and submission of the written component for approval by the scientific committee; . Preparation and execution of the final presentation and discussion in public examinations.
