  • The teaching methodology includes the expository method (TM1) to present the contents, the demonstrative method (TM2) to illustrate its application to practical cases and the active method (TM3) to solve classroom exercises, with and without the use of a computer. Real datasets and statistical software are used to promote the critical interpretation of results and the practical application of the concepts.

  • At the end of this course unit, students should be able to: LO1: Understand the basic uses and concepts of statistics; LO2: Represent data through tables;  LO3: Represent data through graphs; LO4: Calculate and interpret descriptive measures; LO5: Analyze correlations and fit simple linear regression models to data; LO6: Use R software for statistical data analysis.

  • A avaliação de conhecimentos é feita por avaliação contínua ou por prova escrita de exame final. A avaliação contínua inclui a realização de dois testes escritos com uma ponderação de 30% cada, um trabalho de grupo (30%) e a participação ativa nas aulas (10%).

  • The value of data is now recognized in the most varied areas of application, being increasingly in support of decision making. This Curricular Unit starts by introducing the introductory concepts of Statistics, followed by the presentation of various types of tables, graphs and descriptive measures that can be used to organize and characterize the data. It is also analyzed, graphically and analytically, the correlation between quantitative variables and simple linear regression models are developed. The use of R software for data analysis is introduced in this UC.
