- In this curricular unit, the Team-based learning (TBL) methodology is used, with tasks carried out in small groups, allowing the development of the ability to analyze and apply theoretical concepts.
- Mandatory
- To address the general mechanisms underlying the replication and pathogenesis of viral infections. To study in detail the major causative agents of viral infections in humans and the methods used for its diagnosis. Interconnection of the concepts covered in curricular unit such as cell biology, epidemiology and immunology. Understand the components of the viral particle, the genome organization of the virus and the replication cycle steps. Know the viral and host determinants that influence entry, spread, localisation, virulence and transmission of different viruses. Understand the strategies that allow viruses to evade host defences. Know examples of viral inhibitors and antiviral vaccines. Know the main viruses involved in human diseases. Know the main diagnostic methods (supported by the practical teaching component) and prevention applied to each of these viruses

A classificação da disciplina por avaliação contínua calcula-se da seguinte forma: a componente teórica (CT) consta de duas frequências escritas e é relativa aos conteúdos teóricos. A classificação mínima em cada frequência é de 8 valores. A componente teórico-prática (TP) consta de 2 momentos de avaliação realizados durante as aulas. A classificação mínima em cada frequência teórico-prática é de 8 valores. A classificação final é calculada a partir da seguinte fórmula: CF = 0,50 T + 0,50 TP. A classificação de todos os instrumentos de avaliação é expressa numa escala de 0 a 20 valores, sendo que o valor ponderado das classificações obtidas em cada componente tem de ser igual ou superior a 9,5 valores, para efeitos de cálculo da classificação final.
Em caso de reprovação em alguma ou ambas as componentes, o aluno realiza exame nessa/s componentes a contar 100%.

- In this curricular unit, viruses will be studied at the level of their molecular and genetic biology, and their interactions with the host organism. Particular emphasis will be placed on viruses that infect humans and cause serious illness. A comparative approach will be adopted, in which a set of questions will be asked from a biophysical and evolutionary perspective.

- The course leads students to study brain function from the cellular and synaptic level to the functional and system level. The content includes cellular and synaptic neuroscience and is designed to investigate different aspects of sensory systems, as well as higher order brain processing and dysfunction. Teaching is structured around the development of knowledge of brain function, from the cellular level to functional systems and approaches.

- .This UC intends to interconnect different but convergent areas of study, such as Portuguese Language and Language Development, worked on in previous years and Portuguese Language Didactics, available in the 3rd year.
