  • The teaching methodology includes the expository method (TM1) to present the contents, the demonstrative method (TM2) to illustrate its application to practical cases and the active method (TM3) to solve classroom exercises, with and without the use of a computer. Whenever appropriate, software tools and problem-solving activities are used to foster logical reasoning and the application of concepts to Data Science contexts.
  • Mandatory
  • At the end of this unit students should know:  LO1. Master the concepts and elementary operations on propositional logic; LO2. Recognize the concepts of cardinals and combinatorial calculus and use them to solve problems in these domains; LO3. Formulate and solve real-world problems using sums, mathematical induction, binomial expansion; LO4. Recognize the concepts of relationship and perform operations on relationships; LO5: Understand the concepts of formal languages, grammars, finite automata and use them to solve problems in these domains; LO6: Relate the elements of graph theory with Data Science.
  • S1: Propositional logic S2: Cardinals. Combinatorial calculation S3: Sums, mathematical induction, binomial expansion S4: Relations S5: Formal languages, grammars, finite automata S6: Elements of graph theory
  • A avaliação de conhecimentos é feita por avaliação contínua ou por prova escrita de exame final. A avaliação contínua inclui a realização de três testes escritos com uma ponderação de 30% cada e a participação ativa nas aulas (10%).

  • Semestral
  • The curricular unit Discrete Mathematics belongs to the scientific area of Mathematics and provides the mathematical foundations required for Computer Science and Data Science. It addresses discrete structures, logic, relations, graphs and counting techniques, fostering logical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
