  • Each theme to be developed should be framed within the intellectual and cultural context, in general, and the artistic one, in particular. Drawing will be used as it provides a better understanding of the architectural object and is a fundamental instrument in the formulation of its synthesis.Writng will also be used to describe the observed architeectural object. The specific vocabulary of each moment of history is thought of as a means of relating the architectural object to the respective constructive methods, materials, meanings, etc. Abstracting from language and other constraints specific to each historical moment to relate the object under analysis with other contemporaries is also proposed. Students are called to participate in all classes either through more direct answers to concrete questions or through reflections that emerge from the current discourse.

Understanding of the past and how it can be instrumental in thinking about the new problems that will arise to Architecture in the present and in the future.   • This CU will address as themes the various manifestations of Prehistoric architecture, Oriental, Pre-Classical and Classical Antiquity. Like the other disciplines of History of Architecture, it aims, beyond the scope itself, to constitute a conceptual and instrumental basis for the design disciplines. The understanding of architecture in history will be fundamental, both to formulate new proposals and to intervene on what is already built. The present CU also intends to be a contribution for the student to look at architecture through the human and the poetic.

  • 1. The work to be developed with the students is structured in a tutorial teaching. 2. Students are regularly encouraged to develop research according to the different approaches inherent to project development and methodology. 3. In a joint laboratory with the Constructive Systems UC, students develop a group project. 3. Assessment is continuous and values the active participation of students in classes, which will work on Studio basis. 4. It is a minimum condition for the student to have a positive evaluation that he has performed the proposed exercises in a satisfactory and assiduous way. 5. Students’ assessment is valued by their participation in extracurricular activities proposed throughout the semester. Exercise 1: 40% Exercise 2: 30% Model-making workshop: 5% MIA workshop: 10% Extracurricular activities: 5% Attendance and participation: 10% Attendance is mandatory for 75% of classes

  • Provide students with the necessary tools to respond to proposed challenges, enabling them to develop concepts of spatial design that integrate sensory concerns related to composition, formalisation, and scale from the user’s perspective, while adopting a broad approach to architectural issues. At the same time, students will acquire mastery of the basic instruments of graphic representation (both two- and three-dimensional).

  • The curricular unit takes place over 15 teaching weeks, organised in a way that allows theoretical, theoretical-practical, and practical classes to be articulated throughout the semester. The lesson plan assumes a case-based approach to current issues relevant to the didactics of the subject, raised by both students and the lecturer, within the dynamics of studio work. Theoretical classes: Presentation of formative and informative themes, grounded in rhetoric and the critical production of images. Theoretical-practical classes: Participation in study visits, seminars, workshops, critical discussion of theoretical classes, and discussion of students’ work. Practical classes: Tutorial guidance of individual and group work developed by students.

  • Project I focuses on the initial approach to the architectural design process and seeks to develop in students the ability to perceive, analyse, and construct space. It has a strong practical component and aims to implement a learning process that fosters in students the development of their own "Architectural Mind" grounded in manual skills as well as in critical and creative capacity.

  • General Learning Objectives: Relate theoretical knowledge: analyse, categorize and compare the contents of this subject. Know the specificities of a research anchored to anthropology as a field of study. Understand the mode of existence of the urban space and the functioning of the networks that constitute it. Stimulate the critical reflection on contemporaneity.   Expected outcomes (indicators): Develop skills in scientific research: identification, selection, justification and validation of ideas. Identify concepts in reference works and develop further readings. Essay writing, scientifically anchored and parameterized according to academic standards. Realize experiences in visual illustrations (scale models and/or drawings). Critically discuss the contemporaneity, correlating the acquired knowledge. Apply knowledge and anthropological tools in transdisciplinary research projects.

  • Curricular unit that aims to gather scientific knowledge and ethnographic techniques that allow the identification and analysis of contemporary representations of Space. The programmatic contents were selected in order to cover the mutations, contexts and dynamics that compose Space as a field: from macroprocesses, such as globalization and generalized acceleration, to microrelations, such as the heterotopic and the particular, and thus considering pressing issues such as climate change. It promotes the analysis and reflection on the local and translocal processes that address contemporaneity, along with the seminal impulses that actively contributed to the real and symbolic construction of space.

  • The Sistemas Construtivos II Curricular Unit continues the presentation of a fundamental aspect of architecture, based on the precept that one of the distinctive and identitary elements of an architectural piece, the result of the design act, is that it is a constructible "thing". This means that during the second moment of the MIA.ISMAT course, this UC will teach the future architect the need to master constructive systems and the language of communication for the work, so that, in the future, with a master's degree, he will be able to embody his architectural response, through something included in the discipline's collection. Using the learning-by-doing method, the UC will inculcate basic principles (for example, gravity or balance) throughout the semester, always taking care to communicate the reasons and causes behind these axioms.

  • The course contents will be developed through expository/participatory lectures that aim to discuss with the students the fundamental theoretical elements for a critical analysis of phenomena of reality and man. The course unit will be assessed by active participation in class (10%), individual written assignments to be presented in class for that purpose (40%) and at least one written test (50%).
