  • In accordance with the reflective and exploratory nature of this course unit, students are expected to experiment with different tools and working methods. The aim is to diversify the modes of reflection.   M1: Expository lectures; M2: Text analysis groups; M3: Collective discussion; M4: Individual written reflections; M5: Guided group work; M6: Public presentations.

  • For architectural theory to maintain its relevance, it must retain its historical significance as observation (the¿ria) and theatre (theã). While the former grants the observer a certain agency over the object seen, the latter transfers agency to the means (or medium) of framing, performance, and/or visualization. More than simply reviewing theories more or less established by disciplinary tradition, the aim is to understand the major debates of today. Therefore, the student is expected to be able to:   O1: Identify - perceive problems and characterize them, analyze and interpret contemporary debates and their implications and contributions to and from architecture; O2: Reflect - construct a thoughtful position on these debates through justified and coherent argumentation; O3: Communicate - develop a discourse with clarity and precision in the instruction and organization of oral, written, and visual records.

  • The course is divided into different themes that characterize and interrogate contemporary disciplinary debates. For each theme, several works and projects are presented that highlight its architectural manifestation. To support the discussion, there is a set of content and authors who, privileging different geographies, genres, cultures, and disciplines, will serve as starting points for reflection.   S1: Knowledge - and the conditions of its construction; S2: Digital - and the technologies that transforms life; S3: Work - and the precariousness of immaterial labor; S4: Human - and its redefinitions, transformations, and expansions; S5: Planet - and the means of extractive production; S6: Economy - and the supposed imperative of the neoliberal market; S7: Politics - and the place of emancipation of citizens.

  • In etymological terms, theory, from the Greek the¿ria or the¿ros, means to look at, see, contemplate, but also, consider, speculate. It is a point of view, a perspective on things, their description and, of course, an attempt to understand them, to give them meaning. In general terms, theory can be defined as a way of seeing, understanding, explaining and clarifying events or objects. Theory is also a way of questioning assumptions, present realities and the way in which discourse is formed and maintained. Its task is to make sense of the world and form intelligible narratives, orienting from the particular to the universal through abstraction. It is through the articulation between the abstract and the concrete that theory has the capacity to act, in contrast, for example, with philosophy. This is the capacity that allows theory to be an instrument of intervention, and of change, in a rapidly changing world. Theory is a way of thinking and acting.

  • ¿Communication through drawing (free and rigorous) and diverse graphic pieces. In the first semester: development of analytical skills in DU, exploring models of representation. Study visits, in groups or individually. Quick exercises in class to stimulate creativity. Main exercise: Revisiting the Pontal neighbourhood with a focus on collecting, analysing and studying 20th-century neighbourhoods. Theoretical-practical guided work, with an interdisciplinary approach integrating architecture and urbanism. Development of an urban study in three phases: Survey, analysis and characterisation, with different scales of approximation and focus on the neighbourhood. Comparative analysis, relating national and international models. Study and critical analysis, with mapping, issues and hypotheses of urban (re)design. The analysis should be developed, like a proposal, as a field of methodological experimentation and representation.

  • Develop experimental urban analysis work based on established neighbourhoods, exploring methodologies of knowledge, representation and intervention. Study the main urban models in urban planning history. Learn to read and interpret the city through urban morphology and building typology. Understand the city through perception (sensory, analogical), information (documentary, human) and cartography (design and legislation). Value fieldwork, documentary research and data collection from population. Distinguish between Urban Design and Urban Planning. Exercise critical thinking on urban issues and identify opportunities for strategic intervention. Develop the ability to design on an urban scale and the fundamentals of technical design and model making. Explore the notions of living space in the city context. Understand the relevance of urban design as an urban regenerator and an instrument for social, economic, cultural, environmental and quality of life improvement in the collective space.

  • First semester aims to revisit Pontal Bairro, focusing on the collection, analysis and study of 20th-century neighbourhoods, with an exercise entitled: ‘The city, neighbourhood by neighbourhood. Urban design’. The syllabus includes: Urban planning and the city as historical process The city as a cultural landscape (social, economic and technical synthesis) The construction of the city: formation, evolution, transformation and urban models The city in Portugal: morphology and models Urban regeneration Urban planning and the urban scale Structural elements and units of the city: boundaries, roads, neighbourhoods, intersections and landmarks The built environment: block, plot, building and façade; the detached building Green structure and eco-urbanism Urban forms, grids and networks (system) Urban landscape and perceptible elements Public space: beyond the street and the square Public space: routes and permanence. Uses of space: private space for public use National and international urban plans.

  • DUI focuses on the study of urban space design through the morphological elements of the city, also considering the city's historical strata, urban plans and the different dynamics of public spaces.   • Classes are theoretical and practical, with three stages: a brief initial presentation (15-20 minutes) to introduce concepts and demonstrate tools; students practice by replicating what has been demonstrated; collective summary with discussion and clarification of doubts. Progress is made by completing all the steps necessary to model a dwelling, so it will be continuous work throughout the semester, going through all the project phases. There is room for collective presentation as well as individual monitoring, allowing the pace to be adjusted and specific difficulties to be addressed. The methodology favors logic: learning by doing, correcting, and repeating. Each module emphasizes digital sustainability and standardized deliveries, all in digital format, reducing the number of printouts—directly contributing to SDGs 4, 9, 11, 12, and 13.

  • At the end of the course, students should have acquired knowledge that enables them to: O1 - configure Archicad (profiles, layers, attributes); O2 - model walls, slabs, roofs, stairs and spans, stairs/guardrails; O3 - organize views: execute sections and elevations, apply scales, graphic styles, and annotations (dimensions, texts); O4 - compose layouts and export the designed parts in PDF/DWF; O5 - interoperability: import and export in different external formats (DWG/DXF/PDF/JPG); O6 - Apply digital sustainability practices, reducing the amount of paper printing, in line with SDGs 4, 9, 11, 12, and 13

  • Fundamentals of digital representation in architecture; Archicad environment: initial configuration, libraries, and templates. 2D tools: lines, polylines, arcs, splines, editing, and use of the magic wand. Systematic 3D modeling: walls, slabs, columns, beams, spans, roofs, stairs, railings, morph, and shell. Boolean operations and simple parametric objects. Views: sections, elevations, graphic styles, thicknesses, hatching, scales. Layouts and sheets: stamps, captions, standardization. Publishing/exporting: PDF, DWF, images; interoperability with external formats. Digital sustainability: practices to reduce printing, optimize file size, and ensure graphic consistency, in line with SDGs 4, 9, 11, 12, 13.
