- This course adopts the principles of Active Methodology, where the student is placed at the centre of all the planning and structure of the lessons and (consequently) the content covered. Gamification is applied to increase student engagement and motivation, using challenges and rewards. Hybrid learning combines in-person and remote classes, expanding access and flexibility. These methodologies promote active participation, collaboration, and personalized learning, facilitating the understanding and practical application of complex server operating system concepts.

- The learning objectives of the Server Operating Systems course include enabling students to understand the architecture and philosophy of network operating systems, install and configure server operating systems (Windows Server and Linux), manage user accounts and permissions, and program automated tasks via scripts. Students must be capable of optimizing servers, managing resources, configuring essential network services (DHCP, DNS, routing), performing backups, and implementing fault protection systems. They develop competencies to administer devices and drivers, monitor systems, and ensure security and high availability of services. This unit develops the knowledge, procedures, and attitudes required to operate and maintain server infrastructures in real business environments, aligning theory with the administrative practice of networked Operating Systems.
- The course contents of the Server Operating Systems Curricular Unit cover client-server architecture and the differences between desktop and server OSs (Windows Server, Ubuntu/CentOS), installation and partitioning (GPT/MBR, LVM), initial network configuration (static IP/DHCP), and basic hardening. They include the management of users/groups/ACLs/sudo, disks/RAID/quotas/NFS/SMB, essential network services like DHCP/DNS (isc-dhcp/bind9), web servers (Apache/Nginx/vhosts/SSL), Samba shares, and printing. The contents address security with UFW/iptables/fail2ban/SELinux/SSH hardening, backups using rsync/tar/cron, Bash scripting for automation (disk monitoring, cleanup), monitoring (syslog/sar/htop), and basic virtualization (KVM/Docker). The unit culminates in an integrated full-stack server project with production troubleshooting.
