  • TM1. Theoretical exposition of the main contents of the Syllabus (S); TM2. Analysis and discussion of teaching cases. Case studies, real datasets and demonstrations of Data Science tools are used to illustrate applications across different domains and promote problem-based learning.

  • At the end of this course unit, students should be able to: LO1: Understand the different views regarding Data Science, for example, in the context of Management, Science and Society. LO2: Acquire the fundamentals of data science research and applications and the ethical issues involved. LO3: Know the basic tools and principles inherent in the collection, treatment and analysis of data and the presentation of results. LO4: Understand concepts related to Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.  
  • S1: Introduction to Data Science S2: Types of problems treated in Data Science, in the light of the different application domains S3: Ethics in Data Science S4: Data collection and processing: data sources and types, data collection and processing techniques, Big data and data on the Web S5: Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning  

  • Avaliação:

    - 2 testes escritos (50%); 

    - Trabalho em grupo (40%); 

    - Assiduidade e participação ativa nas aulas (10%).

  • The curricular unit Data Science Foundations belongs to the scientific area of Data Science and introduces the fundamental concepts, methodologies and applications of Data Science. It develops skills to understand the data lifecycle, the main challenges of Data Science and its role in creating value and supporting decision-making across different application domains.
