  • In this curricular unit, viruses will be studied at the level of their molecular and genetic biology, and their interactions with the host organism. Particular emphasis will be placed on viruses that infect humans and cause serious illness. A comparative approach will be adopted, in which a set of questions will be asked from a biophysical and evolutionary perspective.

  • .This UC intends to interconnect different but convergent areas of study, such as Portuguese Language and Language Development, worked on in previous years and Portuguese Language Didactics, available in the 3rd year. It is intended, therefore, that students acquire skills that meet the training profile necessary for the exercise of their future professional activity, encouraging research and raising awareness of the contribution that different knowledge makes possible in the teaching and learning process.

  • Innovative methodologies supporting the teaching-learning process favour an active, participatory, and student-centred approach, linking theoretical knowledge with practical application in a medico-legal and forensic context. Problem-based learning and expert case studies develop technical-scientific reasoning, analytical capacity, decision-making, and critical interpretation of evidence, injuries, samples, and reports. The use of simulated cases, images, expert reports, multimedia resources, technical demonstrations, and guided discussion of forensic situations supports understanding of collection, preservation, chain of custody, and evidence production procedures. The integration of autopsy simulations, disaster scenarios, laboratory analysis, and expert testimony brings teaching closer to professional practice, encouraging autonomy, ethical rigour, critical thinking, multidisciplinary cooperation, and preparation for judicial contexts.
  • Mandatory
  • To publicize the role of Legal Medicine, the relationship of this medical specialty with the other forensic science and the importance of their contribution to the achievement of justice. To familiarize the student with the methods and techniques of forensic and forensic research in the field, at the office of observation, the autopsy room and laboratories. Ensure the highest level of cooperation and the best results in terms of evidence. Transmit differentiated knowledge of the forensic intervention in different situations clinic nature or in autopsy.¿ Know and interact with the medicolegal services and experts that there perform functions  and apply scientific and technological knowledge acquired, to identify, collect and preserve probative evidence in people and bodies, as well as to recognize, report and interpret the most frequent lesional results found in victims of violence.
  • The principal forensic laboratory sciences that integrate Forensic Medicine (Toxicology, Genetics and Biology, Criminalistics and Forensic Pathology). Reference to other emerging forensic sciences, such as Entomology, Palynology and others. The medico legal autopsy and the relevance of complementary exams for the conclusions of the autopsy report. The application of genetic analysis and forensic toxicology. Procedures for harvesting, packing and shipping of biological samples and traces of the place. Principles of safeguarding the chain of custody of the samples. Principles of application of spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques in forensic expertise. The expert report, the medico legal advice and expert testimony in the court hearing. Psychiatry and Forensic Psychology: exams and expert reports.
